This brief challenged me to create a handmade book portraying 'Me and my city'. I tried to show within my final piece the juxtaposition between a modern city centre and a more deprived and run down environment which may only be metres away. I found a quote at the start of my brief on which to base my concertina book, this helped me plan the rest of my piece.

One half of my book portrays the inner city with illustrations and photographs of modern Leeds whilst the other side of the concertina contains photographs of 'the real Leeds' across various photographic mediums. Size 21cm x 12cm mixed media

The first two pages of my book show my response to the skyline and type. I responded to my quote by producing an illustrative skyline which is set in three different layers showing how the city can be divided between modern and derelict.

Photography was an important part of my project. Because of this, I researched various different techniques. This experimentation included pinhole photographs which, although a lengthy process and not used in my final piece, was a good skill to have acquired for later practice.

These collages which I created, influenced the use of layers within my work. I looked towards artists such as Hannah Hoch for inspiration. I used various materials such as newspaper, acetate and card which meant many layers could be seen through each other. This is also seen in the first page of my final book. Both pieces are A4.
I used these photographs at the start of the brief to get a better understanding of my urban environment in particular my focus: Leeds. This meant I would explore both the modern city as most see it and the derelict urban environment on the outskirts of the centre. Photos are digital.
